Privacy policy
Who we are
PlagTrace provides plagiarism and similarity checking to schools, colleges, universities and education software providers. For submissions checked on behalf of an institution, the institution is the data controller and PlagTrace acts as its data processor.
What we collect
- Website enquiries: your name, work email, institution, role and message when you request a trial or contact us.
- Customer accounts: staff names, email addresses and login activity.
- Submissions: the documents and text sent for checking, their extracted text, similarity reports and any reference supplied by the institution.
- Technical data: IP address and request logs, used for security and to prevent abuse.
How we use it
- To provide similarity checks and reports to the institution that submitted the work.
- To reply to enquiries and set up trials.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix problems.
- We do not sell personal data or use submissions for advertising.
Service providers
We use Cloudflare to host the service and store files (in the EU), and Brave Search to find matching public web pages. Only short extracts of a submission are sent for web searching. A current list of providers is available on request.
How long we keep data
By default original files are deleted after 30 days and reports after 12 months. Institutions can set shorter periods and delete individual documents at any time. Website enquiries are kept only as long as needed to deal with them.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, or object to its use. If your work was checked by your institution, please contact the institution first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
